When It Feels Like You Don’t Belong
We’ve all been there a time or two. We’ve all felt left out, isolated, out of place. I’ve felt this way many times as a christian, when surrounded by unbelievers. I’ve felt this way while working, at the park and even with family. I’ve even felt this way surrounded by other Christians.
It’s true that God doesn’t want us to feel this way. He wants unity throughout His children. In fact, Philippians 2:2 says, “2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.” God wants us to feel accepted in fellowship.
But you know what? The truth is, we don’t belong.
“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” Philippians 3:20 (ESV)
Our home is in heaven, so it makes sense if sometimes we feel like we don’t belong here. However, be encouraged to know that you belong to the One True King. He cares for you, and cares for your hurts. Many times in His life Jesus was isolated by the people around Him.
So what do we do when we feel like we don’t belong?
Well, the first thing we should do is pray. God wants us to express our feelings to Him. Ask Him to reveal if there is a meaning behind your feeling. Maybe it’s time for a change of scenery?
If there is a certain person who’s made you feel this way, pray about the situation and talk with them. Don’t ruin a friendship from what might be a misunderstanding.
Most importantly, when you feel like you don’t belong, lean into God. Read your Bible, pray and worship. Bask in the peace that your Father provides. We will always belong to Him, and there’s nothing we can do to change that.
Dear Father, help me to feel a belonging among the people around me. Please give me wisdom to know when I need to move on. Lord, help me to remember that this is my temporary home, and not permanent. God, remind me every day to whom I belong and how I can grow closer to you. Amen.
